About Symbolwise

You see an unfamiliar symbol — on a food label, a medicine box, a piece of jewellery, in the news, or somewhere you can't quite place — and you want to know what it means. But you don't know its name, so a conventional dictionary or search engine only works if you can already describe or spell it. Symbolwise is built for that gap: you can search by what a symbol looks like, where you saw it, or what you think it might mean, not only by its name.

Symbolwise combines identification, visual description, meaning, context, history, provenance, confidence, relationships to other symbols, and real-world appearances into one record per symbol — rather than being only an emoji database, a Unicode catalogue, an icon library, a spiritual-symbol site, or an unstructured collection of claims. A symbol can have several genuinely different, independently sourced meanings across cultures and eras, and Symbolwise is built to represent that honestly instead of flattening it into one answer.

Every meaning is rated for confidence across several independent dimensions, with a plain-English rationale rather than a bare score — see our methodology. Disputed, sensitive or uncertain interpretations are marked as such rather than hidden.

Symbolwise is operated by HEKNO Ltd and is part of the HEKNO family of research products, alongside Namewise (names), Colourwise (colour) and Numberwise (numbers) — sister products that share architecture and a commitment to sourced, confidence-rated, evidence-calibrated information rather than unattributed claims.

The catalogue is intentionally small at launch and grows through a deliberate research and discovery process — searches that return nothing, symbols people ask us about, and gaps in existing symbol systems all feed a prioritised research queue, described in our editorial policy. Nothing is published without proper sourcing, and nothing is published automatically.

We don't claim to be the largest or most authoritative symbol resource available — that's an ambition we intend to earn through sourcing discipline and coverage over time, not a claim we make on day one.
