Look for the star. A crescent on its own is the astronomical symbol for the Moon, used in almanacs and calendars, and carries no religious meaning at all. A crescent paired with a star is a distinct symbol widely associated with Islam and appearing on several national flags. A bare crescent on a calendar is not a religious statement.
In astronomy the crescent stands for the Moon. In an interface it usually switches to a light-on-dark colour scheme. But not always: several platforms use the same crescent for do-not-disturb, so a crescent in a status bar cannot be read at all without knowing which system you are looking at.
On a chart or in an ephemeris, a circle with radiating strokes is the Sun itself. On a shipping carton the same drawing is an instruction: keep this package out of direct sunlight. One names a star, the other tells a handler where to put a box, and only the surrounding context separates them.
