The marks that report a state rather than offering an action, which is a distinction users cannot always make and interfaces do not always honour. Three members carry genuine ambiguities the records state rather than smooth over: the mute icon may show the current state or the action it will perform, a crescent moon means dark mode on one platform and do-not-disturb on another, and the padlock means the connection is encrypted and has never meant the site is trustworthy.
