Vitriol meant the sulphate salts — green vitriol for iron sulphate, blue for copper — and, distilled, the acid drawn from them. Also the subject of the best-known alchemical acronym, whose modern fame considerably exceeds its historical importance.

The phrase is genuine and attested in early modern texts; its prominence in modern esoteric writing far exceeds its role in laboratory practice.
