A capital A with a subscript, the even permutations only.
Also known as: Alternating group, Even permutation group, A subscript n
The alternating group is half of the symmetric group: the permutations you can build from an even number of swaps. From A_5 upwards it is simple, which is the algebraic fact that makes the general quintic unsolvable by radicals.
Denotes the alternating group: the subgroup of even permutations, of index two in the symmetric group.

Is simple for every degree of five or more, and that simplicity is precisely why polynomial equations of degree five and above have no general solution in radicals.
