The twenty-four-spoked wheel at the centre of the Indian flag comes from the Lion Capital of Ashoka, a third-century-BCE pillar. It replaced the spinning wheel of the independence movement's flag in 1947, and the spoke count is fixed — twenty-three or twenty-five would be a different symbol.
