The attitude indicator shows the aircraft's orientation against an artificial horizon, and the convention is that the aircraft symbol is fixed and the horizon moves. Pitching up raises the brown; a pilot trained on the opposite convention will fly the instrument backwards, which is why the two conventions have never been mixed.
