Letters and numbers naming a cell's physical size and chemistry.
Also known as: CR2032, Cell designation, Battery type code
A battery designation names physical size and chemistry, not capacity: a CR2032 is twenty millimetres across and three point two millimetres thick, with the CR naming lithium manganese dioxide. AA and AAA are older names from a separate American scheme that survived alongside the numeric one.
Names a cell's physical dimensions and chemistry, the digits in a coin cell code giving diameter and thickness in tenths of a millimetre.

Says nothing about capacity, so two cells of the same designation can differ substantially in how long they last.

Coexists with an older lettered scheme, which is why AA and AAA sit alongside numeric designations for cells of comparable age.

Two capital letters followed by four numerals, or one to three capital letters alone, printed on a cell.
