A number and a suit — the level, and what would be trumps.
Also known as: Contract notation, Number and suit on a bridge scoresheet
Written as a numeral one to seven followed by a suit mark or NT. The numeral is not the number of tricks: it is tricks above six, so 1♠ is a contract for seven of the thirteen.
A bid written as a numeral from one to seven followed by a suit mark or the letters NT, naming the proposed trump suit and the number of tricks above six that the side undertakes to win.
The offset of six is the point most often misread. A contract of one is a contract for seven tricks of the thirteen — a simple majority — and seven is all of them.
The numeral counts tricks above six, never tricks.
Suits rank in bidding in the order clubs, diamonds, hearts, spades, with no-trumps above all four, which is why the suit marks appear in that order on a bidding box and a scoresheet.
A single numeral immediately followed by a small suit mark or the two letters NT.
