A small flag that falls when time runs out.
Also known as: Flag fall, Time expiry marking
On a mechanical chess clock a small flag is lifted by the minute hand and falls at the hour, marking that time has expired. Digital clocks retain the language — a player is said to have flagged — and often display a small flag icon for the same reason.
Marks the expiry of a player's time, lifted by the minute hand on a mechanical clock and falling as it passes the hour.

Has survived into digital clocks as both a term and an icon, so a player is said to have flagged on a device with no flag.
