A split pomegranate showing its seeds.
Also known as: Pomegranate motif China
A Chinese motif of a burst pomegranate, carrying a wish for many descendants.
Works by resemblance rather than by pun, which makes it one of the few auspicious motifs that reads without Chinese: the fruit is always drawn burst open, because the seeds are the whole point and a closed pomegranate says nothing.
Contexts: History
A round fruit drawn split open along one side, the rind curling back to show a dense mass of small seeds packed inside.
The other fortune motif it sits beside, and the contrast in how each works.
