A Greek mu, the ratio of friction to normal force.

μ is the ratio of the friction force to the force pressing the surfaces together, and it is dimensionless. It comes in two values for one pair of surfaces — static and kinetic — with the static one larger, which is why a stuck object jerks free rather than sliding smoothly.
