Brackets supporting a roofline, each carved as a head or a beast. They are structural first and decorative second, which is why they run in an even row at a fixed spacing rather than appearing where a carver felt like it.
Structural before decorative. The spacing is set by what the roof needs, so the subjects were chosen to fill positions rather than the positions chosen to suit the subjects.
Because each is a separate small commission with no programme to follow, corbel heads carry an unusual amount of individual and often satirical subject matter.
