Writing D instead of d/dx turns differentiation into an object that can be added, multiplied and factorised, which is what makes operator methods for differential equations possible. The price is that D alone does not name the variable, so the convention has to be declared.
Denotes the differentiation operator treated algebraically, so that D² is the second derivative and polynomial expressions in D are meaningful.
