European fuel labelling uses shape as well as text: a circle for petrol, a square for diesel, and a diamond for gaseous fuels, each carrying a code — E5, E10, B7, H2, CNG. The shape is the point. It survives being read at a glance, in the rain, by somebody who does not read the local language, and it is repeated on the filler flap so that the vehicle and the pump can be matched without knowing either. The codes give the proportion of renewable content, which is what decides compatibility.
