The letters GL with a size and a field in brackets, the invertible matrices.
Also known as: General linear group, GL, Invertible matrix group
GL(n, F) is every n-by-n matrix over the field F that has an inverse — equivalently, every one whose determinant is not zero. It is the group that all the classical matrix groups are subgroups of, which is why its notation sets the pattern the others follow.
Denotes the general linear group: all invertible square matrices of a given size over a given field.

Sets the naming pattern for the classical groups — SL, O, SO, U, SU all follow the same bracketed size-and-field form.

Two capital letters G and L followed by a bracketed pair: a numeral and a field name separated by a comma.
