Letters and numbers naming points on a Go board, in three competing conventions.
Also known as: Go coordinates, Goban notation, Go game record notation
Go board coordinates name a point by a letter and a number, and there is no single convention. Western practice labels columns A to T omitting I — because I and J are confusable in handwriting — and numbers rows from the bottom. Japanese practice numbers both axes and counts from the top right. Chinese and Korean records use their own schemes. A reader following a game record in one convention against a diagram drawn in another will place every stone wrongly, which is why serious books state their convention on the first page.
A grid of intersecting horizontal and vertical lines with single letters ranged along one edge and numbers up another.
Coordinates in the text, markers in the diagram.
