Marks a refuge in the Japanese carriageway on which a pedestrian may stand while crossing.
Matters most beside Japanese tram routes, where the island is the tram stop itself and stands in the middle of live traffic; the safety zone is legally a place a vehicle may not enter, which a painted hatch alone would not establish.
