The life raft symbol shows an inflatable raft, usually with its canopy, and marks where a liferaft is stowed. The stowed object looks nothing like the drawing: a liferaft is packed in a rigid white cylinder on a cradle, and inflates only when launched. That mismatch is the reason the sign matters — a passenger looking for something boat-shaped will walk straight past the canister. Davit-launched and throw-overboard rafts carry different signs because they are boarded differently.
