A grammar for reading a brand.
Also known as: Reading a brand, Brand grammar
The convention by which a livestock brand is read as a sequence, giving it a spoken name.
Gives a brand a spoken name, read left to right, top to bottom and outside in.
Contexts: History
The reading conventions are as fixed as the designs: a letter on its side is 'lazy', one with curved feet is 'walking', one over an arc is 'rocking', so the brand is a short phrase rather than a picture.
Contexts: History
Registered by state and provincial authorities, which makes brands one of very few vernacular mark systems with a formal public register behind them.
Contexts: History
Letters, numerals and simple figures arranged in a line, with each element's orientation and any added strokes forming part of the design.
