The printed key explaining a map's symbols.
Also known as: Map key, Legend panel, Conventional signs
The conventional signs panel is the map's own dictionary, and it is authoritative for that sheet alone. Symbols are revised between editions and between national series, so reading a panel from one map onto another is the commonest way to misread a map.
Sets out the meaning of every symbol used on the sheet, in the map's own margin.

Is authoritative for that sheet and edition only, since national series revise their symbol sets and different countries do not share them.
