A trumpet-shaped lily carved on a monument.
Also known as: Madonna lily, Easter lily, Trumpet flower on a grave
A lily. Unlike most funerary flowers this one has a documented religious basis rather than a floriographic one: the Madonna lily is an established attribute of the Virgin Mary in Christian art long before Victorian flower dictionaries existed.
Its funerary use rests on that older religious iconography rather than on the nineteenth-century language of flowers, which distinguishes it from most floral gravestone motifs.
Also associated with Easter and resurrection in Christian practice, which is the sense usually intended where a lily appears with a cross.
A flower with six long pointed petals flaring outward in a star shape from a narrow trumpet-shaped tube, on a straight stem with narrow leaves.
