Numbers whose meaning depends on which national system.
Also known as: Needle size, Hook size marking
Knitting needle and crochet hook sizes are numbered on incompatible national systems. Metric sizes are a diameter in millimetres and rise with size; the old British system runs backwards; American letters and numbers are a third scheme, and conversion tables disagree at the margins.
State a needle or hook's size, given in millimetres in metric systems and as numbers or letters in older national systems.
Contexts: Laundry
Run in opposite directions between systems, since British needle numbers decrease as the needle grows while metric sizes increase.
Contexts: Laundry
Do not convert exactly between systems, so published conversion tables disagree at several sizes.
