Shading marks an individual as affected by whatever the chart is tracking. What the shading means is defined only by the chart's own key — the same filled square means a different thing on every pedigree.

Meaningless without the chart's key. The shading says only that this person has whatever the legend defines, and the legend is different on every chart.
A filled shape always requires the legend that defines what it is filled for.
Where more than one trait is tracked the shape is divided into quadrants shaded separately, and a dot inside an unshaded shape marks an unaffected carrier.
