A postage due mark records that an item was underpaid and that a charge is owed before it can be delivered. Historically it was struck or handstamped in a distinctive colour and accompanied by special stamps affixed by the receiving office; modern practice generally uses a printed label and a card asking the recipient to pay. The charge falls on the recipient because the sender is by definition not available at the point the shortfall is discovered.
