The letter or number stamped inside a ring is its size, and which scale it is in depends on where the ring was made. British and Irish sizing uses letters, American sizing uses numbers with halves, and most of continental Europe uses the inside circumference in millimetres — three unrelated scales that produce three different marks for the same ring. It sits alongside the hallmark rather than as part of it, and a ring may carry a size mark and no hallmark at all.
