A backslash between two sets, removing one from the other.
Also known as: Relative complement, Set minus, Backslash operator
The set difference sign gives what is left of the first set once everything also in the second is taken out. A minus sign is sometimes used for the same operation, which is why the backslash is preferred in careful writing: on numbers, minus already means something else.
Denotes the elements of the first set that are not in the second, written A \ B and read 'A minus B' or 'A without B'.
Contexts: Mathematics
Is written with a backslash rather than a minus sign in most modern texts, because a minus sign between sets of numbers is ambiguous with elementwise subtraction.
