A tightly defined vocabulary that sounds informal and is not. 'Imminent' means within six hours, 'poor' visibility means between 1,000 metres and two nautical miles, and every term in the broadcast has a published definition.
A closed vocabulary with published definitions: imminent means within six hours of the time of issue, soon between six and twelve, and later after twelve.

Visibility terms are ranges rather than impressions. Good is more than five nautical miles, moderate between two and five, poor between 1,000 metres and two miles, and fog less than 1,000 metres.

The compression is deliberate. The broadcast must cover thirty-one sea areas within a fixed slot, so every word is doing defined work and none is filler.
