Shogi pieces are identical wedge-shaped tiles distinguished only by the characters written on them and by which way they point. Because a captured piece changes sides, the pieces have no colour: whose piece it is depends entirely on which direction the wedge faces.
Identify whose piece is whose by the direction the wedge-shaped tile points, since both players use identical pieces.
