Also known as: Alfa (phonetic), Blue and white flag on a boat
One of the two flags a recreational boater most needs to recognise. It says there is a person in the water beneath the vessel and that the vessel cannot get out of the way.
Flown alone, Alfa signals that the vessel has a diver down and that other craft should keep well clear at slow speed.
This is the meaning when the flag is flown alone. In a two- or three-letter group it is simply the letter, and the code book gives the group's meaning.
