A tyre's load index is a code, not a weight: 91 means 615 kilograms and 92 means 630, and there is no formula relating them. Fitting a tyre with a lower index than the vehicle requires is an offence in many jurisdictions and invalidates insurance in some.
States the maximum load a tyre may carry, as an index number keyed to a published table rather than as a weight.
