Letters assigned in an order almost nobody can guess.
Also known as: Variable star letters, V designation
Variable stars are lettered in a sequence that begins at R and runs through Z, then RR to ZZ, then AA to QZ, before switching to V and a number. The scheme is a historical accident of running out of letters repeatedly and is now frozen as a matter of record.
