The viewpoint symbol is a small fan of radiating lines marking a place from which there is a notable view. Its direction is the information: the fan opens towards what is worth looking at, so a viewpoint marked on the north side of a hill is not a general recommendation to climb it. Readers habitually treat the mark as a dot and lose the direction, which is the difference between arriving at the right side of a summit and the wrong one.
