A prewash is a short cold cycle run before the main wash to loosen heavy soiling. It needs detergent in a separate compartment, and detergent placed only in the main drawer will not reach it — which is the commonest reason a prewash does nothing.
Adds a short low-temperature wash before the main cycle, for heavily soiled loads.
