Also known as: Arrow side and other side, Weld side convention
The welding convention by which a symbol's position relative to the reference line names the face of the joint it applies to.
Assigns a symbol to the arrow side or the far side of the joint according to whether it sits below or above the reference line.

ISO places the arrow-side symbol below the line and AWS places it above, so the same drawing read under the wrong standard specifies a weld on the wrong face — one of the most consequential notational incompatibilities in engineering.
ISO 2553 and AWS A2.4 use opposite side conventions.

ISO also permits a dashed identification line paired with the solid one to remove the ambiguity, which exists precisely because the two conventions clash.
