Chinese characters on flat discs, differing by side.
Also known as: Chinese chess pieces, Xiangqi characters, Character discs, Xiangqi piece discs
Xiangqi pieces are discs marked with a character, and the two sides use different characters for the same piece — red's chariot and black's chariot are written differently. The pieces are also identified by colour, so the character difference is redundancy rather than a rule.
Denote the Chinese characters marking the flat disc pieces of xiangqi, Chinese chess.

Use different characters for the same piece on each side, so red and black are distinguishable by character as well as by colour.

Include pieces with no Western chess equivalent — the cannon, which captures by jumping over a piece, and the elephant, which cannot cross the river.
