Gemstones set in order so that their initials spell a word.
Also known as: REGARD ring, DEAREST ring, Acrostic jewellery
An acrostic setting arranges gemstones so that the first letters of their names spell a word: ruby, emerald, garnet, amethyst, ruby, diamond for REGARD; diamond, emerald, amethyst, ruby, emerald, sapphire, tourmaline for DEAREST. The device was fashionable in nineteenth-century Europe and it is entirely invisible to a reader who does not know to take the initials. Stone names differed then, so an old piece may spell its word only in the vocabulary of its own period.
A row of small faceted stones of different colours set in a line along a band, each in its own collet, with no lettering anywhere on the piece.
Both hide a message in a ring.
