A short verse or motto engraved inside a ring's band.
Also known as: Poesy ring, Motto ring, Inscribed band
A posy ring carries a short verse or motto engraved on the inside of the band, where only the wearer knows it is there. They were common in England and France from the late medieval period into the eighteenth century, and the inscriptions run from the devotional to the plainly affectionate. Because the text is inside, a posy ring looks like a plain band until it is removed — which is why examples are frequently catalogued as undecorated and their inscriptions found later.
A line of engraved lettering running around the inner surface of a plain band, invisible while the ring is worn.
