The referee sweeps both arms forward to say an offence has been seen but play is better served by letting it run. If the advantage does not materialise within a few seconds, the referee may still come back and award the original free kick.
Signals that the referee has applied advantage: an offence occurred but play continues because stopping it would benefit the offending team. The Laws allow the referee to return to the original offence if the anticipated advantage does not follow.
