The pawn is the smallest piece and the only one that cannot move backwards. It advances one square, captures diagonally, and on reaching the far rank must become another piece. It has no letter in notation: the square alone names it.

The only piece that moves and captures differently: forwards to advance, diagonally to take. It is also the only one that cannot retreat, so a pawn move is permanent.
