The umpire's raised index finger, dismissing the batter.
Also known as: Finger of doom, Raised finger
A single index finger raised above the head means the batter is out. It is given only in answer to an appeal — an umpire does not volunteer a dismissal, which is why the finger goes up after a shout and not before it.
Signals that the batter is dismissed. The Laws of Cricket require the umpire to answer an appeal, and the raised index finger is the answer in the affirmative.
There is no signal for not out. The umpire says the words or simply does nothing, so the absence of the raised finger is itself the decision.
A standing figure with one arm raised and the index finger extended vertically, the remaining fingers closed.
Both are umpire signals defined by the Laws of Cricket.
