The Indian rupee sign was adopted in 2010 following a public design competition. It combines the Devanagari letter 'ra' with the Latin R, and its double bar echoes the Indian tricolour.

Was chosen by open competition. The Government of India ran a public design contest and adopted the winning entry in 2010; the mark combines the Devanagari letter ra with the Latin R, and the double horizontal bar echoes both the tricolour and the convention that a currency sign carries parallel strokes.
Did not replace the older abbreviations everywhere. Rs and INR remain in wide use in printed prices, banking and accounting, and several other South Asian currencies are also called rupee and do not use this sign at all.
