Snooker's notation is a table of values: red one, yellow two, green three, brown four, blue five, pink six, black seven. Everything about how a break is scored and written follows from it. Colours are returned to their spots while any red remains on the table and then potted in ascending order, which is why a commentator can call a maximum break of 147 before it has happened — the sequence is fixed by the values themselves.
