A small filled rectangle hanging below a staff line, a bar of silence.
Also known as: Semibreve rest, Hanging rectangle music
A rectangle hanging below the fourth line is a whole rest. Its near-twin, the half rest, sits on top of the third line instead — the only difference is which side of a line it touches.
Indicates silence for a whole bar, whatever the time signature — which makes it the one rest whose length is not fixed.
Contexts: Music
Hangs downward from the fourth line of the staff, where the half rest sits upward on the third.

A short solid rectangle wider than it is tall, attached to the underside of a staff line and hanging below it.
Identical rectangles; only whether it hangs below a line or sits on one tells them apart.
