An invisible character forcing two characters to join.
Also known as: ZWJ, Joiner character, Invisible joining character, Zero-width joiner
The zero width joiner is invisible and occupies no space, and it instructs the renderer to join what precedes and follows it. It is what makes multi-person emoji work — a family emoji is several people characters joined by ZWJ, and a system that does not understand the sequence displays the people separately.
Denotes an invisible formatting character instructing a renderer to join the characters either side of it.
Contexts: Software
Assembles emoji sequences: multi-person and profession emoji are built from several characters joined by ZWJ, which is why unsupported sequences display as their separate components.

Is required in Indic and Arabic scripts to control ligature formation where the default joining behaviour is not wanted.

Occupies no visual space, so its presence in text is undetectable without inspecting the encoding.

No visible form: the character occupies zero width and is rendered as nothing, its effect appearing only in how the surrounding characters are joined.
