Conformity and market access marks

Marks a manufacturer applies to declare that a product may lawfully be placed on a particular market. Their authority is legal rather than technical, and it is scoped by territory: CE covers the European Economic Area and UKCA covers Great Britain rather than the whole United Kingdom, because Northern Ireland continues to follow the EU regime. Both are routinely read as safety certifications awarded by an authority. Neither is: for most product categories the manufacturer applies the mark on its own assessment and no body grants it.
