Sequential logic, switchgear and protection, sensors and measurement — the parts of the circuit-symbol family that carry a claim rather than name a component. What holds the group together is that most members assert something a reader could take for a drawing detail and cannot: a broken channel line saying a transistor is off at rest, a bar across a contact gap asserting a verified isolating distance, a dot beside a winding fixing its phase, a corner notch identifying an ALU. Two standards govern this material and disagree — IEC 60617 internationally and ANSI/IEEE 315 in North America — and where the drawn forms differ the records name both rather than treating either as the norm.
